HOW DO ESCAPES WORK?

A Food Escape is a food puzzle game in the city. A series of clues are sent to you via WhatsApp and must be solved in the real world, with answers hidden in the streets, buildings and little details around you.

As you solve the clues correctly, they guide you through the city and unlock 3 different delicious independent restaurants along the way, where food is included at every stop.

The game is also timed, we love a bit of competition! You'll be racing against the clock for a place on the leaderboard, but the timer is paused at each of the 3 food stops so you have time to relax and enjoy your food.

You should allow 2-3 hours in total, including time to eat and complete the Escape.

WHAT EXACTLY IS INCLUDED IN THE TICKET PRICE?

Your ticket includes the full Food Escapes experience: clever clues sent to you via WhatsApp, food at multiple restaurants which you'll reveal in the game, and a route through the city which changes depending on the decisions you make in the game.

Just bring a charged phone, arrive hungry, and enjoy discovering some brilliant independent places along the way.

CAN WE START A FOOD ESCAPE ANY TIME WE WANT?

Just before the 'add to cart' button above, you can view the available dates and times for this route.

When you buy the Escape from our website, it's a bit like a voucher as you can either:

  • Buy without booking a date and time, and book later, or
  • Choose a date and time before you buy.

Either way, all bookings are fully flexible and changeable free of charge until midnight the night before your booking.

ARE FOOD ESCAPES SUITABLE FOR KIDS?

9 and over, we think so!
Under 9, please read below.

There's a few things to consider, every child is different so please be your own judge:

1. A Food Escape is a 2-3 hour experience and requires walking around the city - may be a lot for some little legs!

2. The quantity of food included on each escape is enough food to leave an adult full. But for young children, it will be too much. If you do want to take younger children, you are welcome to buy 1 extra person for 2 children and have them share the food. e.g. 2 adults and 2 younger children = 3 tickets and the children can share. This also makes it half price for younger kids.

You are more than welcome to take along children who are not eating at the restaurants i.e. infants in pushchairs, at no additional cost.

3. The puzzles are sent over WhatsApp. Kids who can read well will enjoy playing and reading the clues as they come through. It also requires thought and reasoning to solve some clues. While majority of clues will be solved by finding things around you, e.g. answers hidden in the architecture or the streets around you (all of which would be suitable for any age), some will also need some light maths or common culture knowledge where an adult would need to help.

CAN I CHOOSE WHAT I EAT ON THE ESCAPE?

At some stops you can choose elements like your protein, and at others there’s a small choice of their best items. Some stops include a set dish we’ve curated and tested to fit the overall experience.

Food Escapes has been designed by a food-obsessed foodie who loves food(!) so we are very sure you'll enjoy the food along the way.

I HAVE DIETARY REQUIREMENTS, CAN YOU ACCOMODATE THEM?

Yes. On our All Escapes page, use the filters to enter your dietary requirements. It will only show you Escapes which are suitable to your dietary needs.

For this escape specifically, go up the page and click the 'Allergens / Dietary?' box.

After purchase when you place your booking, you will have an opportunity to further enter dietary requirements.

Part of playing a Food Escape is discovering new restaurants and dishes along the way, but we get this can be stressful for those with strict allergies. If you'd like to know the exact food you'll be eating first, please contact our customer service and we'll help.

ARE FOOD ESCAPES DOG FRIENDLY?

Some are, it's all based on the restaurants on each Escape. Our current Manchester Food Escapes that are dog friendly are as follows:

Los Tacos
Rise & Dine Brunch
Craft Beer

IS SOMEONE THERE TO GUIDE US IN PERSON?

No physical host is involved. All you need is WhatsApp! Everything will be sent to you, you'll just need to solve the clues and eat delicious food!

I UNDERSTAND THIS IS A PUZZLE GAME, BUT WHAT IF I GET STUCK?

You can ask for hints, answers, and clear directions if you get lost - but these will add a time penalty to your final score, so up to you how much you use them.

You won't go hungry if that's what you're worried about!

This is our second tour in a month, the first was ‘Streets of the East’. Both were great experiences with delicious food in places we have never tried before. We would recommend!

Really enjoyed the experience

Really enjoyed the experience. However once dark its very hard to get some of the clues. We did the Indian street food tour. I would suggest completing during light hours as some areas were a little creepy in the dark! Food however was excellent i would absolutely recommend.

Hi Nick, thank you for sharing your experience. I know exactly the areas you're talking about, and this week we've rewritten sections of the game to keep it the same length, but routing away from those areas. We never want anyone to feel unsafe during the games so the change has been made especially as we move towards the darker evenings again (unfortunately). Thanks for flagging this because this feedback helps us make necessary changes and highlight the best parts of Manchester for future players. Glad you enjoyed the food otherwise! Aaron

A fantastic and fun experience combing great foods with exploring a part of Manchester

A fantastic and fun experience that combined great foods with exploring a part of Manchester. It took us to new places to eat and we had 3 delicious courses. The clues and game were fun too, a nice blend of simple with a few challenging clues to solve.

A highly recommended experience.

What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon

What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Started at 3 on time. The clues were great, some easy, some not. The Venus and food were something I had never eaten at or eaten before. A few tipples along the way at our expense just added to the experience. I think I know Manchester well but this experience took me to places I didn’t even know existed. All within walking distance and a few round in circles but not the clues just me 🙄. Do it! Grab a few mates or just two of you as it helps with the clues and have great fun, food filled, brain teasing time in city we all love 🙂

Got this as a birthday present for my husband and he truly loved the experience! We lived in the city for 10years before moving out and it was great to explore the little hidden gems. We walked down streets that neither of us venture down before.

The food was great too! We got to taste things that we wouldn’t normally pick.

Loved the clues part of the experience. We had a great afternoon.

Amazing experience!!!

We had such a fun time with Food Escapes! The clues were clever, the food was delicious, and it made for a really unique experience. I’d love to see a dessert-themed version in the future—I’d definitely book it!

One of the locations- the part where you go down the side of the Unite Students accommodation felt a little unsafe- quite a remote area. I wouldn’t feel safe going down there if it was dark. Just something to consider for future clues. But overall, well put together.

Hi there, thank you for your feedback! The part you're talking about is a common throughfare between student buildings an accommodations, and although the graffiti is commissioned in most parts and gives it a unique character, we can understand why it feels uncomfortable. The game is actually dynamic, so when it's dark, it already knows not to send people down that route as it's not well lit, but we want to keep everyone feeling safe, so your comments are very valid and we're looking at redesigning the route this week. Thanks again for the feedback!

What a great experience!
This food escape was very well run and the clues were fun to solve. We experienced restaurants we wouldn't maybe have come across ourselves and saw parts of Manchester we didn't know. The food at each establishment was delicious.
Will probably book another soon. Highly recommend

Great Value

You get a lot of high-quality food for the price. When you consider the planning and the scavenger hunt, it’s a steal.

So much food!

Definitely come hungry. By the time we hit the third restaurant, we were struggling to finish, but it was too good to leave behind!

Spice levels were spot on

I was worried it might be too mild or too hot, but there was a great balance. The stories about the restaurant owners were a lovely touch.

Authentic regional dishes

Forget Tikka Masala. This is the real deal. The South Indian dish at the first stop was spicy and aromatic. Excellent curation by the Food Escapes team.

Genuine Hidden Gems

I've lived in Manchester for a decade and didn't know the second place even existed. It’s now my new favourite spot. The "curated dish" was something I’d never have ordered but loved.
